Scholarships


* Barton County Community College Sports Medicine Department is looking for students interested in joining the athletic trainers’ staff while continuing their education.  20 – 25 students are selected to join each fall semester.  Books and tuition performance award is given to help meet college expenses.  Must maintain a minimum of 12 hrs. per semester and on overall GPA of 2.0 to be eligible to renew.

* The Bill Spaniol Memorial Scholarship is available for students who show an interest in the Biological or Physical Sciences.  It is offered to promote the Kansas Environmental Health Association as a professional organization and to encourage students to pursue a degree in environmental science or a related area.  Eligible persons must be a Kansas high school senior or person who will be attending a Kansas college or university; maintain an overall GPA of 3.0, with a major in their field of study of 3.2 at the time of application.  Application should be made to the Kansas Environmental Health Association and be postmarked by May 31.  For more information and/or an application please contact the counseling center.

* High school juniors who are residents of Kansas and interested in a Service Academy education are now eligible to apply for a Congressional nomination to the class of 2013.  The academies include the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Naval Academy, U.S. Military Academy, and the U.S. Merchant Academy.  Candidate’s personal files must be complete by October 3, 2008.  Academy classes begin July 2009.  For more information come by the counseling center.  Applications can be found at http://roberts.senate.gov

Junior Days and other Day Programs

The University of Kansas 17th Annual Junior Days.  High school juniors and their parents/guests are invited to begin exploring the many opportunities available to them at the University of Kansas.  There are ten days currently scheduled from which students may select: Monday, February 18; Monday, March 10 (Multicultural Day); Monday, March 31; Friday, April 4; Monday, April 18; Monday, April 21; Friday, April 25; Monday, April 28; Friday, May 2; and Monday, May 5. Registration begins at 9:30 and the day’s activities will conclude around 4:00 p.m.  There is a $15 registration fee which includes parking, breakfast, lunch and a t-shirt for each high school junior. Space is limited for each day and is on a first-come, first-serve basis.  You may register online at www.admissions.ku.edu/juniordays.   Additional information may be obtained in the counseling center.

* Pathways to Nursing - Nursing Academy 2008 - June 16 – 20, 2008

Designed to introduce high school students to careers in nursing, students will learn about various nursing professions, participate in experiential learning activities, tour hospitals, and receive academic enrichment.
To be eligible for the academy, applicants must:
Have a cumulative grade point average of 2.75 and above
Be a junior or senior in high school in the fall of 2008
Have documentation of your up-to-date immunizations
Live within a 60-mile radius of the Kansas City Metro area
Students selected for the academy will be notified by email and/or phone and will need to respond that they are still interested in attending. Selected applicants will stay in the dorms at the University of Missouri – Kansas.  There is no cost for students for participating.  Applications are available in the counseling center or visit http://nursing.umkc.edu/pathways.cfm.  Application packets must be submitted by May 2, 2008.

* K-State Junior Days will be held on April 7, 14, 21, and May 5.  K-States open house will be April 19.  Visit www.consider.k-state.edu/events for more info. 

* Dodge City Community College Leadership Institute will be held June 21-28, 2008.  Junior, senior or college freshman students will be able to explore seven career academies, as well as experience the college life while living in a residence hall.  You will be eligible to earn 3 hours of college credit and meet other students from across the state.  All this for a $100 enrollment fee.  Please see the poster outside of the counseling center or visit www.dc3.edu/liDeadline to register is May 15, 2008.


Summer Camps, Institutes, Program

Stop by the Counseling Center to learn more about various summer camps offered by Northwest Missouri State University.

* The College of Engineering at Kansas State University is again hosting the Engineering and Science Summer Institute on the KU Campus May 26-May 30, 2008.  This institute offers high school students an opportunity to learn about engineering, as well as physics, chemistry, biology and math.  The program is designed to aid students in determining his/her interests both in college and beyond.  In addition, those attending will have opportunities for leadership and learn about campus life.  If interested, please contact the counseling center or visit www.engineering.ksu.edu.

* University of Kansas Freshman Summer Institute: June 15 –July 11, 2008.  This institute is for students who have been admitted to the University of Kansas for Fall 2008 to “try on” KU prior to their arrival in the fall.  Through the program, students will take 5 hours of KU credit, live in the residence halls and gain a better understanding of KU resources. Application deadline is May 1, 2008.  Application and additional information is available at www.advising.ku.edu/fsi.  All interested students should apply online.

* Sponsored by Newman University, the Mary K. Koch Foundation, and the University of Kansas School of Medicine; The Investigative Summer Science Program is being held June 9-20, 2008 in Wichita, Kansas.  Room and board for two weeks as well as two hours of college credit is provided at no charge to participants upon successful completion of the program.  Applicants must be a sophomore, junior or senior with a minimum 3.0 GPA and have completed at least one high school science course.  Application and 200 word essay must be submitted by April 23, 2008, for guaranteed consideration. 

* The 2008 Kansas Youth Leadership Academy Summer Leadership Camps will be held June 4-6 for middle school students, and June 17-20 for high school students at Fort Hays State University in Hays, Kansas.  These camps are statewide, comprehensive programs that promote youth leadership development.  For more information, please stop by the Counseling Center or visit www.developingleaders.org.
