Because of that rating by the Kansas State Education Department, the AHS Video students were invited to showcase their talents at the Eighteenth Annual Education Technology Fair at the State Capitol. Eight students and their sponsors, AHS Video Production Instructor Bob Neidinger and High School Principal, Forrest Covey, were greeted at the Capitol by Governor Kathleen Sebelius, Dale Dennis, the Commissioner of the Kansas State Department of Education, Senator Jean Schodorf, Chairman of the Senate Education Committee and Representative Clay Aurand, Chairman of the House Education Committee. Later Senator Dennis Pyle stopped by to commend the students on their accomplishments. Students participating were: Derek Scott, Seth Stillings, Stash Holmes, BJ Young, Hillary Nicholas, Josh Middleton, Chris Clark, and Megan Hundley. The students demonstrated various skills that they use in their classes along with a greenscreen, which allowed visitors to try their broadcasting skills. While there, the students were able to visit the other exemplary program demonstrations, watch the House in session and tour the capitol building. Video production at AHS is a three-level process. In Video Production I, students learn the basics of camera operation, storyboarding and video editing. In Video Production II, students learn advanced features of Final Cut Express, how to use Chroma-key, and advanced storytelling. In Video Production III, students use all they have learned in the previous two courses to produce an interactive yearbook on DVD. Students also learn to organize, create menus, film, and market the DVD. They are the producers, directors, videographers, editors, and marketers of their yearbook on DVD. |
